It’s simple, the more comfortable an A/E is with cold-formed steel, the more they will use it and the more they will encourage owners to use it. As CASFA trains A/E’s, more projects will be designed using cold-formed steel (which will increase steel sales) and the better the design documents will be for the contractors in the field.
CASFA Code Officials Outreach makes it easier for you to get projects through permit by training local building officials. Many local code officials are not familiar with the use of cold-formed steel. As a result, they may require heavier designs than are necessary. In some cases, they may not allow it at all. This can be costly to the project. As CASFA trains these officials, these barriers should be removed.
CASFA Contractor and Student Outreach makes it easier to find qualified skilled labor by supporting and training the labor force. Currently, the industry is being hurt by the lack of skilled labor. As CASFA creates and develops training programs for the labor force, this will result in an increased skilled labor pool. As CASFA helps to bring new skilled labor to the workforce, the price of cold-formed steel construction will reduce and the products built will be of better quality.
CASFA sponsors research and development projects. These programs will help bring new materials, tools, and methods to the marketplace.
CASFA is affiliated with the national Steel Framing Alliance. The purpose of SFA is to work at the national level to expand the use of cold-formed steel. They are, and already have, worked to develop tools that are critical to bringing the cost of cold-formed steel construction down. They have already developed software (such as SteelXpertTM, a cost estimating software) and have established alliances with major manufacturers of steel framing components.
Membership in the Steel Framing Alliance allows you to:
- Participate on member teams and help steer the Alliance’s national activities
- Participate in local Alliances, where everything that happens nationally is put to the test and adapted to local market needs
- Network with potential customers and other suppliers with useful solutions you can adapt to meet the needs of your business, on a national and local basis
- Test new tools and fastening systems you can add to your product offering and increase your margins
- Differentiate your business with Alliance steel branding concepts - from ad slicks to printed collateral - that you can offer to our customer as part of the package
- Get significant discounts on Alliance resources from consumer marketing collateral to estimating software and installation guides
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Members in the Alliance can:
- Learn about new fastening systems designed to save time in the construction process. Stocking these tools and fasteners for the residential market is a simple way to offer the complete package in steel, as you do for wood
- Understand and provide steel requirements in the IRC and IBC, based on Prescriptive Methods (ANSI standards produced by the Committee on Framing Standards, a group funded by the Steel Framing Alliance)
- Determine stock lengths of steel framing, and consider cutting services for longer spans. Include connectors and accessories making the steel framing package a simple alternative for your builders
- Obtain takeoff and estimating software, based on the steel provisions in the new building codes, to help your customers meet code requirements
- Learn what makes other member companies successful with steel framing
